Cyprus, Accounting and Finance

Rafaella Ioannou, 21 from Cyprus have completed her studies in BA (Hons) Accounting & Finance at the University in July 2013 and have achieved an overall grade of a First Class Honours (1). Here is what she shared with us about her course and student experience:

About the course
My favourite subjects during this course have been Quantitative Skills for Accountants, Financial Accounting and Financial Reporting. What is more, my special interest lies in the following modules: Finance, Financial Management and Theory and Practice of Equity Trading. Each consecutive year the course has become more demanding with higher standards and expectations from the faculty. This made me overcome any difficulties I had and I have learnt how to participate positively in this challenging environment. Courses aside, one of the most enjoyable experiences I have gained from university life is that I have met students from all over the world such as China, Uganda and Italy and have been introduced to their cultures and traditions.

Why study Accounting degree?
I chose to study this subject as accounting sector provides a rewarding and far reaching career path. With an accounting degree you can focus on different areas such as financial accounting, corporate finance, tax audit or assurance services. You are able to work either independently and handle your own clients, work for government or for private organizations and accounting firms. It also offers a plenty of career opportunities that you count on such as Financial Analyst, Investment Analyst, Cost Accountant etc or become a member of a professional body (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CPA, IFA, ICAEW, etc).

The nature of my degree course has prepared me for the future career that I want to follow which involved a great deal of independent research, requiring plan and self-motivation. I have also gained a wide range of skills such as excellent written and oral communication skills, analytical reasoning and numerical accuracy skills, Be observant, methodical, well-organized & good problem solver, critical & logical thinking, strong excel spreadsheets and financial modeling skills, ability to work in a team, under high pressure and be confident to meet strict deadline, personal integrity. I believe that most kind of jobs require the above skills in so as to meet its expectations.

Why study at the University of South Wales?
I have chosen to study at the University of South Wales, because it offers you 1 year placement gaining work experience as the University collaborates with organizations such as Atradius and the Welsh Government. Additionally, the BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance is fully accredited by ACCA, which means that you are not only graduate with a reputable degree, but you are also too close to get the professional qualification something that enables you to stand out from the others. The affordable course fees compared to other UK universities is one of the most attractive reasons to study at this University.

Student life in Cardiff
During the 3 years of my studies I used to live in Cardiff, City Centre and without a doubt my student life was really amazing. Cardiff is a really wonderful place to live. It has lots of things to do, from walking the busy city, the ancient arcades, Cardiff Castle, night clubs and cafes or enjoy a visit at Cardiff Bay and admire the spectacular view. I could guarantee that you will never get bored if you choose to live in the city.

Student experience
In conclusion, I wish to add that my time spent at the University was a unique experience because of meeting people of great importance, both students and professors. This is the reason why I want to continue my future studies at the same University. My learning experience at South Wales has been positive as I had valuable support and excellent communication with the teaching staff and Students’ Union. Moreover, the whole university campus is under restructuring and all the facilities are refreshed.

Continuing studies at the University
That is why I have already chosen to study MSc Finance at the same university. My desire to study abroad still remains strong, as I will gain one additional, reputable degree. I am a firm believer that my studies in the UK will give me the opportunity to prepare myself for the ever increasing globalised and very competitive business world and make me more confident for the challenging career path that I have chosen.
