Aleksandar, from Burgas, Bulgaria studied MSc Sustainable Business Risk Management in the Treforest campus and he was awarded £1500 postgraduate scholarship. We asked Alex about his experience at the University. Here is what he shared with us:

What do you think about the course you are studying?

First of all, all courses here are supervised by a personal tutor, who can always help you if you have any questions. Secondly, you have a course leader who can always give you guidance with your future steps in terms of your modules. Having these two people to support you from when you start at the University of South Wales helps you to settle in easily. In terms of the modules that you have – they are brilliant. There is an online system where you can find everything you need for your course. Firstly, before all lectures, the lecturer publishes useful papers and notes to help you prepare. You can also use these notes after the lecture to make sure you haven’t missed anything. If you miss some classes, some of the modules have online lectures, which are available to watch either in real time or at a later date. In addition, the course that I’m studying uses a lot of examples that can be applied to the real world and I believe that it will be an incredible start to my career.

Why did you choose this subject?

When I finished my Bachelor’s degree in my country, I asked myself in which area I wanted to be in, where I can build my future etc. After a few months I made a decision to narrow my specialty to the area of “Risk Management”. With this in mind, based on a high level of research into the university’s reputation, I chose the University of South Wales. This was the best decision that I’ve ever made!

How do you think the skills and knowledge you have gained on your course will help you get a job after graduation?

Before I came here, I thought it would be very hard to apply what I’d learnt to real-life situations. I have since been proven wrong. All of the modules that I’m learning are directly related to the real world. Having this brilliant start in my life, with my masters at the University of South Wales, will give me lots of opportunities all over the world. I believe that one day my dreams will come true!

Why did you choose to study at University of South Wales?

At the beginning it was so hard for me to choose a university, because my chosen course is only taught at a few universities in the UK. Mainly I choose this university for three things: firstly, for the affordable tuition fees and the great opportunity to have a scholarship. I quickly found out how easy it was for me to apply for a scholarship and was pleasantly surprised that I was eligible to receive it.

As mentioned, a few other universities in the UK offered the same course, however I felt the fee here was the best. Despite the lower fees, this is not a reflection on the quality of the course. For instance, sometimes people think that it is better to pay a high fee to get a good quality of education but at University of South Wales, this is not true. Secondly, to be in Wales is pleasure for me in terms of the culture and mentality of the people here. Last but not least only a few universities in the United Kingdom have “February intake” like the University of South Wales has and it is brilliant to have the chance to make my dreams come true and study my perfect course.

Has your learning experience at South Wales been positive?

Just one word – amazing! This place is probably the best in terms of the facilities, which the students get a really positive experience from. When you visit places like the library, computer labs, food halls etc, the people there are so friendly and talkative. One day I spent more than 30 minutes in friendly conversation with the staff in the library even though I was just there to return one book. In every department there is an IT room, where you can spend a lot of time with your classmates to do you group coursework or even discuss different topics about your modules.

What do you think of the leisure facilities? Do you use them much?

Remarkable! When I arrived here I was amazed to see how good the sports facilities were! I enjoy a wide range of sports and I was pleased to find out that I can continue with this at university.

Moreover, the Students’ Union is great. There are lots of different kinds of activities that you can do there. For example, I can play poker, drink beer after completing my work, play different games like billiard etc. Sometimes I go there just to eat something because I like the food there. During the night there are a lot of students who are also studying at the university and you have the opportunity to meet new people from different parts in the world – different culture, thinking, speaking.

Tell us about where you live?

I live on campus because I like to be close to everything. I also like it because you can spend a lot of time with other students and enjoy every minute of your education here.

Have you enjoyed your University experience at South Wales?

I have enjoyed every minute of time here. My good experiences have not only come from my lectures, but also from my other classmates.

Could you describe your time at University of South Wales using 10 words maximum?

Honour, pride, potential, experience that is the University of South Wales!
