The University of South Wales has a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the prestigious Beijing Sports University (BSU). As part of the collaboration between the two institutions, Professors Hi Tan and Mong Ren from BSU recently visited USW spending an enriching 10 days with academics specializing in football at the University of South Wales.
The primary aim of the professors’ visit was to discuss the curricula of courses offered by USW as part of the Football Degrees Programme, including courses at Foundation, Bachelors and Masters levels. During their visit, Professors Tan and Ren met USW’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Julie Lydon OBE, staff from USW International and Faculty managers. Discussions with key USW Football staff were held throughout the week and the visitors observed both theory lectures and practical coaching sessions in the recently opened Sports Park facilities.
As BSU has its own youth football academy, the secondary aim of the visit was to investigate young player development philosophies. Academy visits were facilitated to Newport County, Cardiff City and Swansea City where respective members of the coaching staff afforded the visitors valuable insights into their specific player development methodologies. In addition, USW’s unique relationship as the exclusive higher education partner of the Football Association Wales Trust enabled presentations of ‘The Welsh Way’ by coaching and performance analysis staff at Dragon Park, the National Football Development Centre.
It is hoped that the visit will be the catalyst for further collaboration between the two universities to foster the ongoing partnership.
